With millions of users on both sides, it is difficult to decide whether Myspace or Facebook is a viable place to market your business. Both Facebook and Myspace allow pages for business. No matter which social media platform you decide to use for your company, you should familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of each. Myspace and Facebook each have specific terms and conditions regarding the use of their software, being familiar with the conditions will ensure that your business page will not be banned for violations.
Before you decide which media platform to join you should explore each one before making a final decision:
- www.myspace.com: Upon visiting the initial Myspace home page you can tell the audience they cater to by the message they advertise. Myspace has an extremely embedded rock band feel. You may also notice that the front page has links to articles about celebrities, videos and music. Is this a bad thing? If you are trying to portray a professional image….maybe.
- www.facebook.com: What you see is what you get on this social platform. On the Facebook homepage you will see absolutely no advertising whatsoever. The no nonsense design may give your company a more down to business feel when utilizing Facebook to connect socially with potential clients and fans. Also you may notice underneath the sign up portion Facebook has included an important bit of information with an invaluable link. It states: “To create a page for a celebrity, band or business, click here.”
After viewing each of the social media platforms it should be apparent which audience each one caters to. Decision time! Which social media platform should you choose to allow others to connect with your business? Most definitely, without a doubt, the answer is……FACEBOOK!
Why Facebook?
The number one reason is Facebook caters to businesses! Not only do they offer a sleek professional platform but Facebook also has created platforms specifically designed for business. These profile pages are excellent for allowing consumers and other interested parties to explore and connect with your business in a type of neutral setting without feeling pressured by a sales person. Facebook also facilitates the use of their business profiles by providing analytics software to gain valuable insight on the effect your Facebook business page is having on your customers. If you are receiving a lot of visitors to your Facebook page you are definitely doing something right and connecting with your audience.
Does this mean I should not use Myspace for my business?
This is where it becomes complicated. If your business caters to adults, basically anyone 18 and up and the majority of your business is from adults 25 and up, it would most likely be a waste of time to use Myspace. The type of audience you need to connect with is not available when using Myspace, largely because the majority of adults on social media platforms are using Facebook not Myspace. Key phrase here ”perform for your audience”, if your audience is in New York it would not make sense to perform in Los Angeles, in fact it would look ridiculous. However, if you sell products such as skateboards, stickers, snowboards, sports memorabilia, or any type of product that younger consumers are also largely interested in it may be worthwhile to also maintain a Myspace page in addition to a Facebook profile.
There are also many other social media platforms available that could be used to promote your business some are radically different and some are extremely similar to Facebook and Myspace. Bottom line is Myspace and Facebook both have the audience numbers needed to make an impact in the social media whirlwind and after weighing all the options, at least for now, Facebook is king.
